I still want to coach! Gerrard: I want to be a coach again and coach a team that can compete for titles

In an interview, England star Gerrard talked about his future as a coach, ideal challenges and memories of his time coaching the Rangers.

What are your thoughts on the possibility of you returning to coaching?

I certainly hope to try it again at some point. I hope to change a few things, improve a few things, and come back refreshed. Also surround yourself with some different people.

I hope to accept this challenge one or two more times. This is what I'm currently working on behind the scenes. Some different ideas, some different people around me.

Now, I enjoy family time and do many things that I couldn't do before. Things like going to an F1 Grand Prix and playing exhibition games with former teammates and superstars are great.

But deep down I still feel that I still have some unfinished business and hope to dive back into one or two exciting challenges.

What kind of challenge are you looking for?

But what I wanted was a specific type of challenge. If the ideal opportunity presents itself, I'll jump at it. If not, I won't go back. I want to coach a team that can compete for championships because I think that’s a better fit for me.

I think certain jobs and certain clubs will suit my style and the way I like it.

But now that I have time, I am not in a hurry, and I know that there are the right people out there who can make me a stronger and better coach. They were the people I needed to find.

Because if I can be a perfect match with those guys, I know and have proven that I can be successful as a coach. That's what I'm working on behind the scenes now.

How do you look back on your first coaching experience at the Rangers?

I got the opportunity to coach at Rangers and I loved that experience. Rangers, I felt like it was perfect timing. The rest of the story begins from there.

After leaving Saudi Arabia, did you receive any other coaching invitations?

Since I left Saudi Arabia, I have received five or six very interesting phone calls. But I’m not ready yet because I haven’t assembled my team yet. And the timing was wrong.

My daughter just gave birth to a baby. I just became a grandpa. I'm not ready yet. My coaching staff wasn’t ready either. So unfortunately, those opportunities or those calls, so to speak, came at the wrong time.

But if the right call comes, the right club, the right challenge, and I have the people in place - and I believe it will happen one day - I will accept that challenge because the energy is in my bones. It's in my bones.
